Every commerce student gets the same three options.
CA. MBA. Bank PO.
That's it. That's the entire conversation. Meanwhile, there are 277 commerce career paths that never make it into the school counselor's office.
Here are 20 of them.
1. Actuarial Analyst
Salary: ₹7.1L - ₹13.5L/yr
You use statistical models to figure out financial risk — mostly for insurance and investment firms. It's one of the highest-paying commerce careers at entry level, and almost nobody from class 12 knows it exists. You need to clear ACET (the actuarial entrance exam) alongside your degree. Hard to crack, which is exactly why it pays well.
2. Airline Revenue Management Analyst
Salary: ₹6L - ₹15L/yr
Every time you see flight prices change three times in a day, someone built the model that did that. That someone is a revenue management analyst. It's dynamic pricing, applied to aviation. Commerce plus data analytics gets you here. Growing field as Indian aviation expands.
3. Affiliate Marketing Specialist
Salary: ₹3.4L - ₹8.7L/yr
You set up and manage programs where third-party publishers promote products for a commission. It's part of the performance marketing ecosystem that most brands now run on. Entirely learnable without a degree. The ceiling is high if you can actually move numbers.
4. Financial Risk Manager (FRM)
Salary: ₹8L - ₹20L/yr
Not a CA. Not an MBA. The FRM is a global certification from GARP and it's specifically about identifying and managing financial risk for banks, investment funds, and corporates. Commerce background, statistics comfort, two exam levels. That's the path.
5. Credit Analyst
Salary: ₹4L - ₹10L/yr
Banks and NBFCs need people who can look at a business or individual and decide if lending them money is a good idea. That's a credit analyst. It's a core banking role that doesn't require CA and has a clear growth track into relationship management and credit risk leadership.
6. Equity Research Analyst
Salary: ₹5L - ₹18L/yr
You cover a set of companies, build financial models, track their performance, and publish research reports that institutional investors use to make decisions. CFA is the preferred certification here. Not glamorous, but one of the few commerce careers where you get paid to think seriously about businesses.
7. Supply Chain Analyst
Salary: ₹4.5L - ₹12L/yr
Commerce students don't usually think about supply chains, but the entire discipline sits on economics, cost management, and logistics — all things a commerce background prepares you for. Companies like Flipkart, Amazon, and D2C brands are hiring for this constantly.
8. Compliance Officer
Salary: ₹5L - ₹15L/yr
Every regulated industry (banking, pharma, listed companies) needs someone who makes sure they're following the rules. The rules are only getting more complex as SEBI, RBI, and now AI regulations expand. Commerce plus law awareness. Very stable, decent paying, not talked about enough.
9. ESG Analyst
Salary: ₹5L - ₹14L/yr
Environmental, Social, and Governance investing is exploding globally and slowly entering India. Companies need people who can evaluate businesses on non-financial metrics and build ESG reports. Emerging field, low competition, and it overlaps perfectly with finance and accounting backgrounds.
10. Forensic Accountant
Salary: ₹6L - ₹18L/yr
You investigate financial fraud. Banks, law firms, government agencies, and corporates hire forensic accountants when money has gone somewhere it shouldn't have. It's accounting plus investigation. The work is genuinely interesting and the pay reflects the specialization.
11. Treasury Analyst
Salary: ₹5L - ₹14L/yr
Every large company has a treasury function that manages cash, foreign exchange exposure, and short-term investments. It's high responsibility, closer to finance than accounting, and the career track leads to CFO territory. Most students confuse it with banking. It's not the same thing.
12. Taxation Consultant (Indirect Tax / GST)
Salary: ₹4L - ₹15L/yr
Not the same as CA, and you don't need to be one. With GST now the backbone of Indian indirect taxation, businesses of every size need consultants who specialize in it. Semi-qualified CAs, commerce graduates with DISA or GST certifications, and B.Com + LLB combinations are all doing well here.
13. Insurance Underwriter
Salary: ₹4L - ₹10L/yr
You decide whether to insure something and at what price. It's risk assessment applied to everything from health to property to aviation. Strong numerics + business understanding. Under-discussed, steady demand, and a clear specialization path into marine, life, or commercial underwriting.
14. Venture Capital Analyst
Salary: ₹6L - ₹18L/yr
You screen startups, build financial models, do market research, and support investment decisions for a VC fund. It's competitive to get into but not closed off to commerce graduates who also understand technology. A CFA or MBA helps, but strong analytical skills and startup awareness can get you in the door early.
15. Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Analyst
Salary: ₹8L - ₹25L/yr
Investment banks and consulting firms hire M&A analysts to value companies, build deal models, and support transactions. Long hours, high output, and one of the most direct paths to high compensation in finance without waiting 20 years. Entry via investment banking programs or CA/MBA with the right internships.
16. Cost Accountant (CMA)
Salary: ₹5L - ₹15L/yr
ICMAI's CMA qualification is the actual competitor to CA that nobody talks about. It focuses on cost management, management accounting, and operational finance rather than auditing and taxation. Manufacturing, infrastructure, and government sectors specifically hire for it. Three years, three levels, and a legitimate designation.
17. Business Valuation Specialist
Salary: ₹6L - ₹20L/yr
Startups get acquired, companies get listed, divorces involve businesses, disputes require valuations. Someone has to say what a business is worth. This is a niche that sits at the intersection of accounting, finance, and legal proceedings. Registered Valuers under IBBI is the formal path in India.
18. Financial Planner (CFP)
Salary: ₹4L - ₹15L/yr + commissions
The Certified Financial Planner designation is globally recognized and focuses on personal financial planning — retirement, tax, insurance, and investment strategy for individuals. India's middle class is growing, and very few people actually have access to a proper financial planner. Underpenetrated market, legitimate demand.
19. Customs and Trade Compliance Manager
Salary: ₹6L - ₹16L/yr
India's import-export sector is growing fast. Every company moving goods across borders needs someone who understands customs regulations, duty structures, and trade agreements. Commerce plus logistics knowledge. Gets interesting fast as you deal with everything from pharmaceutical exports to tech hardware imports.
20. Fund Accountant
Salary: ₹4.5L - ₹12L/yr
Mutual funds, hedge funds, and PE firms need accountants specifically trained in fund accounting — NAV calculations, investor reporting, and regulatory filings. It's a specialization within accounting that pays better than general accounting and has strong demand from the BFSI sector. B.Com or BBA plus the right certification gets you in.
The point
Your counselor isn't hiding these options from you. They just don't know them.
The commerce stream has 277 career paths. Most students are choosing from a list of three.
That gap is the problem More Options is trying to fix.
